Week 5 Recap

New England Patriots had the most distributed target tree in Week 5: 86.7 chaos points, 30 targets and 9 targeted players. Efton Chism III led the team with 16.7% of its targets.

Los Angeles Rams sat at the concentrated end of the board with 74.3 chaos points. Puka Nacua accounted for 44.4% of its targets. A concentrated target tree describes who received the work; it does not measure passing efficiency.

Miami Dolphins had the deepest team target profile at 12.2 yards per target. Puka Nacua (LA) led the plotted players with 24 targets and a 7.7-yard aDOT. Volume and depth describe different parts of a receiving role.

The Team Target Trees

Week 5 only. Higher chaos means targets were more evenly spread. Team aDOT averages target depth across the team's recorded targets, weighted by the number of targets.

Reading the Receiving Roles

Farther right means more targets. Higher up means deeper targets. A receiver can have heavy volume on short throws, or a deep role with only a few chances. One deep target can produce a large aDOT, so read depth alongside volume.

Chaos belongs to the whole team's target tree. Players on the same team share that score; it does not rate an individual player's performance or guarantee next week's workload.

How this ranking works

How to read Thanos Index

  • A higher score means the team spreads its targets across more players instead of relying on one or two receivers.
  • Target chaos = 100 × (1 − sum of squared player target shares). The score is not normalized by receiver count; teams need at least five counted targets.
  • aDOT is average depth of target in yards, including incomplete passes and targets behind the line of scrimmage. Targets with missing air yards are excluded from the depth average, not treated as zero.
  • Team aDOT is weighted by targets with recorded depth, rather than averaging player averages. The weekly article plots that week's player targets and aDOT; the season table combines targets through the selected week.
